Exodus 22:36
“The Lord has been the people’s guide”
There’s nothing wrong with that,
But “with Him still on the people’s side”
Is this really a fact?
Let me make it abundantly clear
The omnipotent Lord does not pick sides,
That there is a glitch in the anthem
Cannot conscientiously be denied.
A case in point would be Joshua
As he spoke to the children of Israel:
“Choose you this day whom you will serve”
Was the ultimatum he put to the people.
Whether the Gods their fathers served
Or the God of the Amorites,
He chose with his house to serve the Lord
For after all, this is right.
Or Moses, Joshua’s predecessor
That posed the question differently,
Who is on the Lord’s side? He asked,
As still demanded of you and me.
“With Him still on the people’s side”
Is a somewhat presumptuous,
To suggest God goes around picking sides
Is nothing short of scandalous.
The Lord will only be on our side
When we are choosing the Lord
And, given a lot that has been going on
We have been spurning His Word.
“You are my friends,” Jesus said,
“If you keep my words.”
So, to me it automatically follows,
Enmity results from the reverse.
It comes right down to the question
Of who is on the Lord’s side,
For when we follow the Lord’s dictates
He is seen to be our guide.
Acknowledging the Son is paramount
And co-eternal with the Father
And with the Holy Spirit being one,
Becomes the essential matter.
Who is on the Lord’s side?
That is how I would rather put it
And not the Lord on the people’s side,
As is now our national habit.
To some this might seem frivolous
To others, a case of splitting hairs,
But to a people reliant on God’s guidance,
He will take care of all their fears.
