Not Detached but Distinct

The Gospel of Mark - Son of God, Son of Man - Logos Sermons

I’ve been puzzled for a while

Concerning Mark 13:32,

Because these are the words of Jesus

They surely must be true.

But of that day and that hour

Knoweth no man,

No, not the angels which are in heaven,

Neither the Son, but the Father.

Jesus had just foretold

The destruction of the temple

And this had evoked a probing query

From four of his disciples.

“Tell us,” they had inquired,

“When shall these things be?

And what shall be the sign

When all these things shall be fulfilled?”

Whatever your eschatology

You certainly cannot ignore

That here is something the Son of man

Is saying he does not know.

It was a searching question,

It meant a lot to them

And the fact that Jesus did not know

Posed a colossal problem.

This is fodder for the JWs

Who argued Jesus is not God

And Allah has no son, you should note,

Is the Muslim call.

It was a challenge for the disciples

And a difficulty for me too,

Is there anybody with an answer?

Tell me, have you?

I have listened to a few people

As they shared their view

But any who contradicts the Word

Surely cannot be true.

Jesus makes this statement!

It can only be false or true,

There can be no other option here-

This is neither opinion nor view.

John 5:25-27 (Son of Man, Son of God) | THE RIVER WALK

God knows everything

And Jesus is shown to be God,

How can Jesus not know something

If he is also God?

Jesus always spoke the truth

And these are the words he said,

It is established that God cannot lie

Why would His Son lie instead?

Let’s look again at the statement

And ascertain its facts,

It is explicit and uncomplicated

And of clarity there is no lack.

But of that day and that hour

Knoweth no man,

No, not the angels which are in heaven,

Neither the Son, but the Father.

Notice first the hierarchy:

At the bottom is “no man”

Then the angels which are higher

And of the heavenly clan.

“No man and not the angels!”

And next: neither the Son!

The Son knew not the day or the hour

When these things would come.

Mark 13:4

Tell us,

When shall these things be?

And what shall be the sign

When all these things shall be fulfilled?

The Gospel of Mark - Son of God, Son of Man - Logos Sermons

That the Son knew not the answer

Is crystal clear to me

Though both God and man

The Bible shows, was he.

Hence, the title of this poem:

Not detached but distinct,

From this we can grasp a few things

If we take the time to think.

I speak of the Son’s dual nature:

He was fully God and man,

Without the issue of sin of course,

To effect redemption’s plan.

In his divinity he knew everything

But in his humanity, he did not

And it was in the latter status

That he spoke to the enquiring lot.

Although he was the Son of God,

He humbled himself as a man

And thus, in his incarnate humanity,

He was not privy to every plan.

You would recall Luke 2:52

Where it says his wisdom increased

Hence, as a man he was limited

But as God such limitations ceased.

Jesus: The Son of God | Mike's Place on the Web

Not detached but distinct

To fulfilled redemption’s plan,

Jesus Christ was the Son of God

But also, he was the Son of man.

On the one hand he knew all

As accorded by his divinity

But at times his limitations were evident:

The effect of his humanity.

Romans 2:6-8

“Who, being in the form of God,

Thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

But made himself of no reputation,

And took upon him the form of a servant,

And was made in the likeness of men:

And being found in fashion as a man,

He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,

Even the death of the cross.”

Jesus: The Son of God | Mike's Place on the Web

Imposed limitations

Not forced on him by any man

But in accordance with his dual nature

To accomplish our salvation plan.

Peace on Show

Image result for images for Luke 2:14

Peace on earth, good will to men
The message the angels brought
To shepherds attending their flock
Who in haste the manger sought.

Like them too the wise men
Would diligently follow the star
That led them right to Bethlehem
Having journeyed from afar.

Two distinct groups of persons
Lowly shepherds and the wise
Bowing before the baby Jesus
The one whom King Herod despised.

He would have worshipped him too
Or so to the wise men he said
But deep in his evil heart
He rather wished him dead.

A cry was heard in Rama
As prophesied by Jeremiah the prophet
Rachel weeping for her children
Herod was taking care of the threat.

Many young males had perished
In Herod’s quest to vanquish the child
But God protected the Prince of Peace
And Herod’s desire was denied.

To a world of turmoil peace came
At the advent of the Prince of Peace
But just a few would derive the benefit
The Savior had come to release.

It was a peace unknown to a world
That wallowed in war and strife,
All men are equal they said
But evil and envy were rife.

On hearing of the Prince of Peace
Herod feared of losing his kingdom
And therefore plotted at once
To get rid of God’s beloved Son.

War trembled at the sight of peace
Like darkness cowering before light,
Evil cringed before His Righteousness
Faith had become the eyes of sight.

At the advent of the Prince of Peace
The kingdom of strife took a blow,
A mortal one in fact it was
God’s Son was placed on show.

Peace on show in a manger lay
Peace on show in Bethlehem
Peace on show on Calvary’s cross
The peace that was crucified by men.

Give us war and give us strife!
Appeared their incessant cry,
Away with the Prince of Peace
Barabbas would satisfy!

Peace on show among the sick
Peace on show among the blind,
This peace on show we present today
Is none other than Jesus, the Divine.

Son of God and Son of man
Into earth’s dimension he came,
King of kings and Lord of lords
The next time he will come to reign.

The culmination of a show begun
In yonder town of Bethlehem
A tourist boom during Caesar’s census
But no room for him in an inn.

A stable only they could provide
But there the shepherds were at home,
Hope for the oppressed, the down and out
And all in a crowd who feel alone.

He wants to be on show in our hearts
That is the stage he came to win,
Unlike the inn keepers of Bethlehem
Open its door and let him come in.

Put him on show for the world to see
As you walk across life’s stage,
Be a light for the Prince of Peace
In this uncertain and darkened age.

Animals still feature at Christmas time
Though not in a Bethlehem’s stable,
The ham, turkey chicken and pork
Are delights of the Christmas table.

There is still the tourist boom
As many of them come in from the cold
And the merchants in our many stores
Rejoice at what they have sold.

Christmas is a show of lights and trees
Celebrated by the high and low
But here is an entreaty to everyone
Please, this Christmas, put Jesus on show!

This Light-Years Phenomenon

Image result for images for Matthew 24:27

They tell me that a light-year
Is the measurement of the distance
That light travels
In a vacuum in a single year.

This amounts to 5.88 trillion miles
If you favour the imperial measure
Or 9.46 trillion kilometres
If the metric standard is your pleasure.

I find it quite amusing
When we spread these numbers around
And those twelve zeroes in the trillions
Can make one look like a clown.

Consider that this is one light-year
And we’re talking “at the speed of light”,
What if it were several light years?
This would be a little too much to bite.

The nearest star to planet earth
Is about ninety-three million miles away,
This is the sun within our galaxy
That brightens each and every day.

The next star in order of distance
Is approximately 4.3 light-years away
It’s really a dual star system
That comprises a binary pair.

That may not mean much to you
And it certainly does not to me
For when I consider things of this type
My head gets a little dizzy.

Image result for images of light years

When I look into the night sky
Particularly on a bright and starry night
I wonder just like David the psalmist
About each of those twinkling lights.

Small they make look to us
Since they are so far away
But times bigger than our planet earth
Though not one you can see during the day.

I wonder which ones are planets
Like the nine in our solar system
And which ones are really stars
Like the sun that each of our days brightens.

There is a lot of argument
Pertaining to the age of planet earth
Which is extended even further
When determining the universe’s birth.

The Bible indicates thousands of years
Men argue it must be billions,
Billions of years for the universe
Considering its trillions of suns.

For when one considers the distance
That some stars are away from us
There is no way the earth could be young,
Now you see why all of the fuss.

How could the light from these stars
Ever have reached planet earth
When we are just thousands of years
And their distance suggests an earlier birth?

It would have taken millions of light years
For their light to reach right down to us
So this particular reasoning
Must give impetus to that thrust.

All this is quite mind-boggling
Even for the scientists
So you could well imagine
How much of it I have missed.

Then of course there are the “gap-theorists”
Who argue that this could very well be
Since no one knows the length of time
Between Genesis 1 verses 2 and 3.

A lot of this is lost on me
And there’s much I don’t understand
But at this point I would endeavour
To point out to you a fact in God’s divine plan.

Just stop for a moment and think!
Where is Jesus at this time?
Have you ever thought of his return?
Has it even crossed your mind?

The Bible says he is in heaven
Perhaps millions of light-years away
But read Matthew chapter 24 verse 27
And take note of what it says.

Image result for images for Matthew 24:27

For as the lightning comes out of the east
And shines even unto the west
So shall the coming of the Son of man be.”
The Bible is the absolute test.

He who spoke the world into being
Can traverse light years in one second
So while this moment is available to you
Why not come to him as he beckons?
