A Dubious Paradigm Shift

Operationalizing Paradigm Shifts in HigherEd

Interpretation and speculation
Conjecture and surmise,
Trying to fit into an agenda
Coming up with a disguise.

Having the gullible for lunch
Spontaneity, the trap,
Appealing to the “feel-good” sense
And supplying their perceived lack.

Redefining and reinventing
Repositioning and meandering,
Missing the mark but growing
And to felt-needs pandering.

Charting a course for growth
Numerical trumping the spiritual,
Rudderless and powerless
But setting sights on the physical.

What an astounding building!
And it cost a pricey piece
With many accommodating compartments
Catering to comfort and ease.

Strategic planning to a “T”
SWOT Analysis and everything,
Mission statements too as in Corporations
But lacking vision in their rendering.

Focusing on Founders’ teachings
And neglecting the spiritual new birth,
Departing from the manual:
The Best Instruction Before Leaving Earth.

A vain and empty religiosity
But amazingly appealing to their groups
Where any and everything goes
And on spiritual matters often mute.

Sailing the contemporary seas
On their emotional high,
Struggling on the earth
But attempting to conquer the skies.

Having their pie and eating it now
“No pie in the sky for me,
Not too sure about what is to come
Heaven is wherever I be.”

Taking lessons from the world
And following its latest trends,
Afraid to stick out like a sore thumb
Thus, to its idols bend.

Justifying the Bible by their life
Rather than the other way around,
Clowning around and other acts
Like when the circus comes to town.

Lacking in substance and in depth
As they misconstrue the Word
But having a tremendous following
In spite of majoring on the absurd.

A dubious paradigm-shift, I call it,
Yet many are jumping on…
The proverbial bandwagon syndrome
In an attempt to surf the storm.

That may seem crazy to you
And it once was crazy to them too,
But one day the craziness became alluring
And it became what they wanted to do.

In these times of strange paradigms
Be very careful how you shift,
Get grounded in the Word of God,
It is not a good idea to drift.
