What’s in It for Me?

What's In It For Me? — Bethel Worship Center

What’s in it for me

Underlies every human attitude

Christian or non-Christian

That’s the general mood.

Paul calls it the flesh

It’s the human nature,

For the spiritually uncircumcised

It’s the bigger picture.

What’s in it for me

The objective and the outcome,

That’s where our focus is

From the rising of the sun.

It’s about our protection

And our prosperity,

It’s about us as individuals

And about our family.

Every deal we broker

Every scheme we pursue,

It’s about the “I”, my friend,

Never first about you.

“But they are exceptions,”

No doubt you will contend,

Yes, pertaining to important others,

Still the “I” in the end.

Whatever we do

Can be traced back to us

Even when we claim

To be closely following Jesus.

Paul speaks of this struggle

Even in the Christian,

It’s the problem in our fellowships,

It’s the underlying mission.

Even when we do for others

It’s about how we look,

It’s our image we are protecting

That’s straight out of our book.

If this poem offends you

Then you prove my point

But I am no different from you

For I sit on my mount.

It challenges our spirituality

As we walk with Christ

And sometimes as Christians

We are not too nice.

Testimonies are often sullied

Because self gets in the way

And if you are like me

It can really spoil your day.

There is that innate drive

Spontaneously to protect the “I”,

We push Christ in the background

And that I can’t deny.

Anger management:

You may want to call it that

But by whatever you call it

It is still the underlying fact.

What’s in it for me

Is what it boils right down to

And it is not only in you

But it is in me too.

It is not the accusing finger

But those pointing back,

When we do the Mathematics

There is an obvious fact.

What a Test!

Where did I go wrong?
Where did I miss the mark?
Why have all this beset me?
Why is it so dark?

Just a short while ago
Everything was going well
Now suddenly it would seem
My life is a living hell.

Honestly I am unable to find
What sin I have done
And however I try I cannot discover
Why this trouble has come.

Not only have I sacrificed
For what I may have done
But for the sins of my daughters
And for the sins of my sons.

I have led an exemplary life
As best as I could,
I have reached out to the poor
As God said I should.

Yet misfortune after misfortune
Has dogged my life
And I haven’t a clue
Why all of this strife!

My friends accuse me
For having done some wrong
And the more I defend me
The more they come on strong.

I have lost my children
I have lost my property,
My wife is annoyed with me
Because of my misery.

I have lost my health
I am covered with sores
And when I think what else
Believe me there is more.

I cry out to God
In the hope that He will hear
That what I am going through
Is too much to bear.

The counsel from my wife
Is “Curse God and die,”
But that is one thing
That I dare not try.

For though He slay me
Yet Him will I trust,
He will redeem me
Even after I lay in the dust.

What a testing it was
That Job went through!
What a testimony he left
For both me and for you!

Graham Vaughn

Concert - Encourage: Graham Vaughn Fundraiser - What's On In Barbados 2018-09-29

You occupy our thoughts
Hours on end
Yes our prayers and best wishes
Go up for you my friend

Even as we take this moment
On your challenge to reflect
We do so with great hope
And all negativity reject

For God is in control
He always does what is best
And oft unknowing to us
He exceeds our requests

Life is lived forward
With no chance to reverse
There are no dry runs
No opportunities to rehearse

But we have this assurance
From the One that knows
That He is with us
In all of life’s ebb and flow

In the twinkling of an eye
Something unplanned did happen
And before you knew it
Your very life was threatened

But in all of your trial
God is evident
And He will work out His purpose
Whatever the devil’s intent

So many lives are touched
And I have no doubt for God
The name of Jesus is raised up
Another loss for the Fraud

For even in your discomfort
The testimony we heard
Spoke of God’s goodness
And the need to trust His Word

Your voice is temporarily missed
From off the air
But we know for sure
You are in our Father’s care

We love you Graham Vaughn
Hurry up and get well
We know you love to talk
And there is much you can tell

Our prayers are with you
And with your family too
We all love you Graham Vaughn
We really do.
