“Everywhere he went
He was doing good,”
So says the wonderful chorus
And sing it we should.
But can you imagine
That his good caused problems?
That there were people
For whom good was a burden?
And what is even more
These people were religious,
They were church people
But to Jesus they were vicious.
To them he was a wine bibber
And a blasphemer
So that everywhere he went
They created a stir.
On this particular occasion
It was some of the Scribes,
When it came to Jesus
They pushed negative vibes.
The crowd was huge
And they all wanted to be near,
They wanted to see
And they wanted to hear.
They all had needs
That they wanted satisfied,
If they could get close to Jesus
They would not be denied.
Well such was the case
With a sick man and his friends,
He was afflicted with paralysis
But was healed in the end.
On the day in question
He was borne on a bed
But unable to get to the door
His friends climbed to the roof instead.
After dismantling the roof
They let him down,
I could just imagine the surprise
For all those around.
This was tremendous faith
Baffling those within
But rather than heal the man
Jesus forgave him his sins.
In their minds
The scribes were hopping mad
But Jesus perceived their thoughts,
Indeed he had.
“Why reason ye
These things in your hearts?”
This was his question to them
They must have had a start.
They said not a word
Yet he read their thoughts,
His question was not answered
But no answer he sought.
He continued his mission
Before they could respond
And with a precise directive
The man’s paralysis was gone.
It was as easy for him to heal
As it was to forgive sins
Though this annoyed the Scribes
From very deep within.
The Son of man has such power
He declared right there
And commanded the paralytic
To take up he bed and go his way.
Not only were his sins forgiven
But his paralysis was paralysed,
That Jesus could do such
Should not have been a surprise.
Those four friends went way
With a wonderful testimony
Of how Jesus can forgive sins
And can heal any malady.
That paralytic immediately arose
And taking up his bed,
Went forth before them all
As a result of what Jesus had said.
The people were amazed
No doubt the Scribes as well
“We never saw it on this fashion,”
That’s what they did tell.
You’ll find this event
In St. Mark’s Gospel chapter two,
It’s also recorded in Matthew and Luke
But this account is St. Mark’s view.
