Some say that Jesus lied
And they use the Bible as proof,
They even give chapter and verse
Showing it was an untruth.
Matthew 24:34
“This generation shall not pass
Till all these things be fulfilled.”
Surely Jesus would have lied
Unless this generation is alive still.
A believer even argued
That somebody has to be alive,
If someone is older than Methuselah;
How did that someone thrive?
He would be 2000 years old
And that would be the very least;
All I can say, and I guess you too,
Wonders shall never cease.
But if this one was incredible
There is another far more so:
Turn with me to Luke this time
If you really want to know.
Luke 9:27
But I tell you of a truth,
There be some standing here,
Which shall not taste of death,
Till they see the kingdom of God.
Matthew 16:28
A similar reference is found
In the book of St Matthew:
That this is Jesus’ transfiguration
Is the view of quite a few.
For immediately following
Both gospels relate the account
When Jesus took three disciples
And went up in to a mount.
For some, Peter, James and John
“Which shall not taste of death”
Became the sole premise
Upon which their explanation rests.
Whatever Jesus meant, be assured
It happened as he said,
And there were witnesses to the fact
Since all were not dead.
And it wasn’t just two or three
As in Peter, James and John
But many witnessed its fulfilment
In an era, a long time gone.
It cannot be the transfiguration
Or the event of Pentecost
For if either of these be the case
Then significant events are lost.
Matthew, Mark and Luke
Chronicle a number of events,
An imminently pending tribulation
Was clearly Jesus’ intent.
Where were the urgency
If it were at least 2000 years hence?
Those who are of this persuasion
Hold to a shaky defense.
I maintain Jesus did not lie:
It is impossible for him so to do,
To all that are so misguided,
It is time you change that view.
