There is a misguided theology
About a tree in Jeremiah
10 verse 5,
Some have used this as a suggestion
That from this the Christmas tree was derived.
When the context of this verse is taken
This was a clear case of idol worship
Where men created gods with their hands
And from God Almighty continued to slip.
The prophets of old warned against this
And pointed out the uselessness of such
But many of that time heeded not their word
For they wanted a god they could touch.
The Christmas
tree is not like this
For it is not carved by human hand,
It is simply cut from a particular tree
And used as decoration is the plan.
The lights upon it are the many stars
That shone that first Christmas night
But the main star we placed at the top of the tree
Represents the star in which wise men delight.
That star shone over the stable shed
On the event of that first Christmas morn,
It led the wise men to the Saviour, Christ,
To the manger in which he was born.
So we need not despise the Christmas tree
Though some regard it as pagan,
So much of it points to the first advent
When our Saviour came down from heaven.
God created the first two trees
The third was cut from a tree,
The fourth was made of pieces of wood
Then mounted at Calvary.
One spoke to the death of man
One could impart eternal life,
One has to do with the advent of Christ
One was designed for mischief and strife.
Through one man could live forever
By one was the cause of his death,
On one died Jesus, the Saviour
In whom there is now eternal rest.
And he bearing his cross went forth
To a place that was called the skull,
The sinless, unspotted Lamb of God
Died to free us from Satan’s pull.
Four trees of specific significance
All of them to do with the Christ,
Adam ate of one that caused man’s death
On one Christ died to pay sin’s price.
The tree of
life and the tree of death
The Christmas
tree and Calvary’s tree;
Four trees it would do us well to consider
As we contemplate about eternity.
The tree of knowledge of good and evil
Was created for a special reason,
The Christmas
tree we put up each year
Is displayed for the Christmas season.
The tree of life was at the beginning
And will be at the end of time,
It will be throughout the countless ages
To provide healing for all mankind.
The tree that provided those pieces of wood
On which the Saviour was laid
Will always be a special tree
For on them the price of our sins was paid.
On Calvary’s tree Jesus died for me
On a cruel cross that was fashioned by man,
On that tree lay the source of all life
As he died to effect redemption’s plan.
On Calvary’s tree Jesus died for you
With your eternal salvation on his mind,
Love held him there not those rusty nails,
He is the only Saviour of this kind.
