Who you are is not what people see,
Who you are is really who you be;
Reputation may last for a put on show
But character is essential to grow.
Oh, Jim is a good man and so is Lou.
Oh, I can tell by the things they do;
But how is it when no one can see?
Are they still whom they ought to be?
Of their reputation many can boast,
To them glasses are oft raised in a toast;
But what’s inside, really can you tell
When reputation causes heads to swell?
Decorating outside while inside ignore,
Reputation’s fine but character is poor;
Sooner or later what’s in will come out,
Character will overrule without a doubt.
Because who we are will soon be known
However we hide and wherever we roam;
A good character will ever stand the test
Then people will see us at our very best.
What makes good character can you tell?
Oh, yes, I can inform you if you listen well.
The Bible is foremost in the specialized list
So do listen carefully, yes, I must insist.
At the top of the list is love that is kind,
It bears no evil; just keep that in mind;
Next is compassion; every saint will agree
Giving help to the needy wherever they be.
Striving for peace in everything we do
With a sense of fair play always in view;
God sees who I am; He knows my heart,
He expects every saint to do his part.
So be always on guard; let your light shine,
Work diligently at the task you are assigned;
To be a Christian is a worthwhile endeavour,
Its life lessons lead to an invaluable treasure.
It’s what’s inside that counts, yes, you’ll agree,
I trust that for all of us this is plain to see;
Man sees the outward while God sees the heart,
Today is a good day to make a brand new start.
