It’s No One

George Kouvaros on No One by John Hughes | Sydney Review of Books

Doesn’t anyone know his name?

Does no one know who is to blame?

Is anyone and everyone the same?

Is someone willing to play this game?

These are the names of some we know,

Might be friend, acquaintance or even a foe;

Has to be someone, you and I know, yes!

Can’t be no one so let’s continue to guess.

Anyone and everyone are our general links,

Someone it has to be everyone of us thinks;

But who it is often is a puzzle to most

While someone, not no one continues his boast.

No one can catch me is the brag of the guilty,

Everyone’s doing it so no one knows it’s me;

Does anyone know? Seems no one does not,

No one’s getting near though someone is hot.

Someone and no one singularly they come,

Anyone and everyone each having his fun;

Everyone knows someone has done the crime,

But no one knows anyone that must do the time.

Yes, these are the names of the people we meet,

Someone sitting next to us sharing the same seat;

Could be anyone, not no one we rest assure,

Only no one not everyone has come to the fore.

Does anyone know who that someone could be

Since no one knows or cares to tell me?

Everyone thinks it’s anyone but certainly not he,

But no one admits he is the guilty body.

Has to be someone, not no one, that is clear,

Someone had to do it though no one was near;

Couldn’t be everyone, no not possible, no way,

Anyone had to be someone, that’s what I say.

Someone and no one: those are two that I know,

Everyone and anyone, two more make four

That is blamed for every wrong deed ever done

And often escape thinking they have won.

Someone *

Sooner or later someone is sure to be caught,

No one will escape for he clearly was not;

Then anyone and everyone will be able to see

That someone, not no one, was the guilty party.

Yes, it appears someone does have a name,

But no one was someone, that was the claim;

So, when everyone blames anyone I conclude

That someone was no one in the first prelude.

Who understands this poem?  Someone should,

But no one took time to read it so no one could;

Did anyone read it?  No one did, that’s really bad,

Yet everyone opined that this poet must be mad.

Is anyone listening or has everyone gone to sleep?

Does no one realize that someone took this leap

To write an intellectual piece that no one understands?

If you are someone, not just no one, raise your hands.

No one’s hands are raised, the writing’s on the wall,

That everyone is dumb, that’s my judgment call;

If anyone had taken the time to read this poetic piece,

Someone would have concluded it’s a great release.

Hence, no one still doesn’t know someone’s name,

Yet everyone knows anyone, that’s still the claim;

No one, everyone, stand if you are here!

Did anyone see everyone or you just didn’t care?

These are the people involved in every misdeed,

Anyone and everyone striving to meet his greed;

No one was there but someone gets apprehend

For whom some lawyer gets his chance to defend.

No thanks for not reading, I shall end as I began,

Who are no one and someone?  Tell me if you can;

Doesn’t anyone know his name?

Didn’t you know that you are the one to blame?
