We like to blame the devil
For every conceivable wrong
As though he always determines
When we are weak or strong.
I don’t only mean sinners
But I mean the Christians too,
They popularize the Devil
By the things they do.
Like a particular village dog
Renown for stealing eggs,
Every time an egg was missing
For its life it had to beg.
There were other dogs around
No doubt that liked eggs too
But this particular thieving dog
Was the only one they knew.
The devil made me do it
Was a line in a popular TV show,
Blame it on the devil!
Since he is everybody’s foe.
It is now very convenient
Every time we do some evil,
“I am not responsible,” they say.
Blame it on the devil!
Preachers, priests and Popes
Politicians, Parliamentarians and PM’s,
Even the police in their blame
Say the devil is the problem.
School children gone crazy
Blame it on the devil!
And adults becoming sleazy
Blame it on the devil!
The church has lost its way
Blame it on the devil!
We changed the meaning of gay
Blame it on the devil!
Everybody is a pretender
Blame it on the devil!
Some don’t even know their gender
Blame it on the devil!
Murders on the increase
Blame it on the devil!
And crime just would not cease
Blame it on the devil!
For every evil thing we do
Blame it on the devil!
That means me and you too
Blame it on the devil!
After all he is D EVIL
He is doing what he does best,
While four-fifths of his name is evil
He is responsible for the whole mess.
Blame it on the devil
We adamantly insist
But renege on the biblical injunction
Which is, “to resist”.
Resist the devil and he shall flee
Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you,
In every temptation God will make a way
Blame it on the devil is a cop-out view.
