Step is a commanding word
With prepositions to match
And out of its tremendous versatility
This poem was hatched.
Thanks to my helpful wife
For the several instances
That I will endeavour to highlight
In these responses.
I am particularly sure
That you too will be lead
To anticipate some that will follow
Indicative of a step ahead.
Ouch, did you realize
That we’re moving already?
Well, step onboard now, my friend!
Step inside confidently.
Three commands thus far
And several to come:
Step forward, don’t step back,
Step up to the fun.
Yes, life is a journey
That none can step around,
We all must step up to the plate
And not step down.
For some it is difficult
And they want to step off
But to step aside doesn’t make sense
Considering the cost.
You could step to the left
Or step to the right
But try not to step behind;
Step up to the fight.
Do not become entrapped
But learn to step on,
Step outside and step onward;
Dare to step beyond.
These steps are not stairs
One goes up and down
But steps like to step through
Or step around.
Regarding life’s obstacles
Watch how you step!
Please use the right preposition
And don’t you forget.
Step up or step down
Step inside or step out,
Be shod with secure footwear
And don’t step in doubt.
Step onto or step into
Step up or step across,
But whatever you do, before you step,
Count the cost.
Know when to step in front
Or when to step behind,
Try not to step out of line, however,
Or step out of time.
Life requires soldiers
That know how to step
So, to utilize these steps correctly
One must be prepped.
Step over or step under
Step forward or back
But bear in mind as you step out,
Try not to slack.
I’ll step out of the way
Or step aside as you'd say,
Step up, add a few more steps
And do it today!
