I was a shepherd boy
Just a mere apprentice,
It wasn’t snowing as some have said
But the air was crisp.
It was a starry night
And the visibility was far,
And if I had a mind to do so,
I’d count every star.
The flock was sleeping
As I wrapped in my fleece
And as I looked at the starry sky,
I was at peace.
My focus was on a star
At least, it looked like one
When suddenly the others receded
And were soon gone!
The entire sky lit up
With almost blinding light
And I was forced to shield my eyes
From the strange sight.
It was a host of angels
Maybe two or even three
And they all sang as one huge choir
Melodiously.
Then as the singing abated
One of the angels spoke
And the message that he delivered
We all took note.
“Be not afraid,” he said,
“For unto you is born this day
In the city of David, a Saviour,
Who is Christ the Lord.”
“And this shall be a sign unto you.
Ye shall find the babe
Wrapped in swaddling bands
And lying in a manger.”
As a little shepherd boy
I had little to say
So, I simply followed the others
As they went away.
I could not believe it
But they left all the sheep
And I felt someone was keeping watch
As they lay in sleep.
Arriving at the place
Which the angel did say
I found the precious little babe
On a bed of hay.
All was peaceful,
The animals stood around
On that very first Christmas night
When Jesus came down.
Immanuel with us
And Saviour of his people
Meaning a light to the Gentiles,
And not only Israel.
And I saw it all
As a little shepherd boy
Where I was welcome at his birth,
Oh, what Joy!
